Webnett77 - virus alert

Post by discerning »

No, this is not an April fools day prank. I wish it was but it's real. Depending
on where in the
world you are, a virus set to launch on April 1, 2009 has kicked in with a
vengeance. We have
been fielding "My website is down ... my email is down" emails from customers
for the past
several hours. Hundreds of them.

Here are the facts:

a. Your website/email is *not* down. Our network and servers are all Linux based
and are
immune to this virus. (One of the reasons we refuse to use Windows)

b. Your website has *not* been infected with a virus for the same reason as the
servers are not
infected - Linux is immune.

c. If you use Windows on your PC or laptop, you may be infected EVEN IF YOU HAVE
ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE. If you are infected, this virus tries to hack into every
account
in your bookmarks. BEWARE - it can use your stored password for
tehillahdreams.com to hack it.

d. If you are infected, get help ASAP. Follow the instructions here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007 or call Microsoft support.

e. Right now, the internet is as slow as mud in many places around the world.
It's going to get worse before it gets better.

f. You can email email us if you cannot connect to your site or email but there
is nothing
we can do. The problem is not with us. The problem lies with every service
provider in the
word using Windows. If your service provider uses Windows anywhere in their
network
(or if their network connects to other Windows networks before reaching
tehillahdreams.com), chances
are you are going to have problems until they sort this out.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?

a. About the network, connection to your site, slowness, timeouts - nothing but
wait
for the various providers to get this under control

b. About your PC - go to the Microsoft link above and follow the instructions,
update
your virus software, run a full scan and hope for the best.

Fortunately, if you run Linux or a MAC you don't have to worry about your
machine being infected.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Brent

yup I went through all the PC's in my home last night and made sure all the latest software updates are in place and I virus scanned the PC's totally. At the very least, if you do not have any virus protection software due to finances ($65/yr seems excessive to me too for Norton), get the AVG free virus scanning software and install that.
