Silver
Silver has been used lately to slow the growth of bacteria. Besides colloidal silver, they put it in plastic food containers, in socks for better smell, and the nanoparticles line all sorts of products now, like medical tubing.
It was used in film processing, which is similar to the letter. Deciding a silver-lined paper works for notes, could be similar to sending a photo instead of a text. Maybe that's too complex/indirect though.
One strange thing to note -- two different threads today led me to info on Oak Ridge National Laboratory in TN. It is used in control rods.
It's symbol is a crescent moon...hm.
It tends to be a catalyst (even being a solid.)
