Any idea what it would mean if a person is munching into a whole raw onion (just like you'd eat an apple)?

Sorry discerning. Read that chapter but I can't see how it relates. Did you have something in mind?

Ok, so I think I know what this means.

Fresh onion - new/recent issue.

Taking a big bite out of it is a way of handling the problems. Like tackling it head on, instead of pealing away the problem, one layer at a time.
